For the last three years, St David’s Hospice has aspired to opening more beds in North West Wales, bridging the gap in inpatient end of life care services across Anglesey, Gwynedd and Conwy.
The four-bed inpatient unit, which utilises a redundant ward of the community hospital, now provides the local people of Anglesey, respite and end of life care for those living with life-limiting illnesses, as well as providing support for many of their loved ones.
Led by our Matron and Medical Director, the specialist palliative care team consists of St David’s Hospice nurses, medical team and health care support workers, who will provide 24-hour care, 365 days a year.
Each single bedded-room is modern and fully equipped for comfort, dignity and privacy. Some rooms offer en-suite facilities and sofa beds, accommodating patients who may need to have somebody staying with them at night, plus there is a family room for quiet times.

Working in partnership with Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, the Anglesey Hospice is independent of the NHS, and the clinical team will be funded by St David’s Hospice, through charitable donations and the support of the local community. The Health Board has provided the space for the hospice as well as the support services including catering, maintenance, and IT. There will also be a close working relationship between the hospice team and local Health Board services and GPs.

Anglesey Hospice Sister, Sue Griffiths said:
“It is a privilege to be working for the Hospice and running the new satellite unit with Matron at the helm. The local community and the hospital has really got behind us and is very welcoming.
We have had 35 referrals, and 28 inpatients. We are extremely proud of our staff; they are a lovely team and very supportive towards each other.
The patients without question love the rooms, and the views. It’s been so lovely the summer for them to have the doors open. Looking out across the coast is beautiful, the grass is long and it’s like a field of wheat blowing in the breeze. You can hear it and smell it and the patients really enjoy it.”
