An exciting development for local charity St David’s Hospice will see a redundant ward at Ysbyty Penrhos Stanley, Holyhead converted into four single-bedroom units for local Hospice care.

Opening to its first patients in early 2020, the new Anglesey Hospice will have created a variety of work opportunities and volunteering roles.

The new service will offer a combination of end of life care, symptom control and respite care. Working independent to the local health board, the charity will fund and train all staff to the same high standards and expertise in specialist palliative care provided at the main Hospice in Llandudno.

Amanda Powell Jones has recently been appointed Sister-in-charge of the new Anglesey Hospice and is in the process of recruiting a team of nurses to help deliver the specialist care.

She said:

“St David’s Hospice places a high value on dignity, respect and the wishes of the person who is ill. The aim of the team is to look after all their medical, emotional, social, practical, psychological, and spiritual needs, and the needs of the person’s family and carers.

“In a standard medical setting, the focus is typically on treating a singular symptom, injury, or illness. In hospice care, the focus is on treating the person as a whole and improving their quality of life through comfort measures.

“When I say to people ‘I’m a hospice nurse’, at this point, the most common response is a mixture of horror and pity: ‘Gosh, you work in a hospice? How do you do that job? It must be so difficult’.

“My answer tends to be: ‘It’s a lovely place to work and very satisfying. It’s not a depressing place at all. Being able to partner with patients and families during their final stages of life is extremely rewarding”.

“We are all very excited about the new satellite Hospice. It is the result of a lot of planning and hard work behind the scenes.  We look forward to being there for the local community of Anglesey when they need us most.”

The easiest way to support St David’s Hospice is by joining their Hospice Lottery. If 500 people from Anglesey were to join the Hospice Lottery for £1 per week, it would fund the first Anglesey Hospice Nurse.”
