Since a young age, Carol Thorne from Llandudno has always loved photography. She received her first Brownie camera at the age of seven and her lifelong hobby has grown with her.
Now retired, the enjoyment of creating beautiful images has become a passion and an ongoing fundraising activity for her local Hospice.
In 2011, Carol retired as civil servant and with her free time she decided to create handmade greeting cards with local images taken by herself, and then sell in aid of St David’s Hospice.
Over the last nine years, Carol has dedicated her time to the cause and can often be seen at every local fete, fair and car boot sale with her stall selling the beautiful cards.
Sometimes starting as early as 4am, Carol and her husband create the bespoke cards at her home in Llanrhos. Last year Carol made over 4000 cards, each one is made by hand, no machinery involved. The total amount fundraised since she started has now reached over £16,262.
Carol who is a member of Llandudno’s U3A Photography group said:
“I am delighted and overwhelmed by the support that I have received over the years. I really love what I do, and I am so grateful to the local people who continue to support me. Some of my customers are still keeping in touch with me whilst I am unable to go to events and sell the cards.
“Now that the fete and fairs are being cancelled, I am looking for additional locations to sell them. The Coop stores in Craig Y Don and Deganwy have been extremely supportive and continue to sell my cards throughout the pandemic for me.
“Sadly, the amount raised this year will be affected because I can’t get out to sell them. Now that Lockdown is relaxing, I would love to hear from anyone who would be happy to display my cards and help to sell them. It’s a pleasure to support St David’s. I know personally how important the care is to the local community.”
Carol’s range of cards have also adapted with the times and now include the local images of the Orme’s goats who ‘took over’ Llandudno whilst in Lockdown, including the most recent of queuing outside the hairdressers!
Fundraising and Events Manager, Andrew Everley expresses his thanks to Carol for her hard work and said:
“Carol has been a wonderful supporter of the Hospice for many years and we are so grateful for her continuous enthusiasm and dedication. The endless creation of cards has raised an outstanding amount of money for St David’s Hospice. Carol also provided all the images for the Hospice 2020 calendar which has been a great seller this year.”
