Two friends from Llanberis put on their boots and walked to raise funds and awareness for end-of-life charity, St David’s Hospice.

Bet (Elizabeth) Huws and Gareth Roberts walked a 47.8-mile route of the Pilgrim Path on the 10th to 16th May (coinciding with Dying Matters in Wales Awareness Week).

Bet Huws, Soul Midwife explains:

“Back in February whilst walking Cwm Brwynog, I came up with an idea that would intertwine my interest in adventures and end of life care, namely walking the Pilgrim’s Path from Llanberis to Aberdaron.

“Thankfully, the adventure also appealed to my friend, Gareth Roberts, so we set about turning the concept into a reality.”

“Gareth and I decided to raise money as a team, as we both value the work that the Hospice does greatly: providing love, care and comfort at the end of life is the greatest service that one can give.”

The four-day walk started at Llanberis, and followed a route along the north coast of the Llŷn Peninsula to Aberdaron on the western tip. The pair enjoyed a varying landscape following rivers, sheep tracks, quarry trails and paths through mossy forests and meadows to the coastline. The walk was challenging at times, as was the weather!

Talking about the walk, Bet said:

“It was a very special and rewarding experience, a true pilgrimage back to myself after such a bonkers year! Life was literally so quiet for four days: no cars, no noise other than bird song, the river and waves, and the sense of leisure, reminding me of my childhood. Being in the midst of nature in its wild glory and the footsteps of history: old domestic and industrial ruins also reminded me of my roots. We celebrated the end of our journey with a lovely ice cream.”

Keri McKie, Gwynedd and Anglesey Area Fundraiser said:

“A heartfelt thanks to Bet and Gareth for supporting our charity. It is a wonderful achievement. The money raised through their sponsorship page will make a difference to our patients and their families in their time of need.”

Bet and Gareth thank everyone for their generous support and contributions and to date they have raised £1,244 for St David’s Hospice,
