John and Linda Whitfield, Gogarth Morfa, Llandudno recently donated £3,186 in lieu of sending Christmas cards and receiving gifts.
Diagnosed with secondary breast cancer, Linda is currently attending the Therapy Centre at St David’s Hospice, Llandudno and wanted to show her appreciation for the care received.
Linda, 70, a retired sand and gravel merchant said:
“I look forward to Thursdays when I attend St David’s, I love it. Everyone is so pleasant.
“I spend a whole day at the centre and enjoy the variety of activities, including crafts and receive aromatherapy and hand massage. I am unable to walk far now, but at the Hospice, I am able to spend half an hour cycling on the physio’s bike exerciser. It’s wonderful.
“When I leave at the end of the day, I go home feeling well-rested and refreshed.”
The idea to fundraise came about when Linda felt she didn’t have the patience to write and post hundreds of cards. She was delighted when her husband John suggested the idea to ask for donations via Facebook in lieu of presents and sending cards.
The generosity astounded the retired couple, the donations from friends and family totalled over £5400. St David’s Hospice received £3186 and the remainder donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.
Linda’s husband John said:
“It’s a pleasure to be able to help and donate to such a deserving cause in St David’s Hospice.
“Donations have been received from our worldwide friends, whom we can’t thank enough.
“It was an unbelievable response to a lady who is so much loved and cherished, thank you to all concerned.”
