40ft Hong Kong dragon boats will be racing to the finishing line, in a bid to raise money for St David’s Hospice on Saturday 29th June.
For the first time, parent and teacher teams from Llandudno’s Ysgol Gogarth will be battling to win the trophy on the beautiful Lake Padarn, Llanberis.
KS2 Teacher, Odine Matscheroth came up with the idea of taking part and believes the Dragon Boat challenge will be a great event to build the teacher and parent relationships.
“We want to get everyone involved – the senior staff, the teaching assistants and especially the parents.
“We’re now coming to the end of our inspection, which has been a busy period here at the school and everyone is quite tired! We believe this challenge will get everyone’s morale up again and it’s a great way to team build.
“Angharad, our Family and Community Engagement Officer, has got the parents involved and that’s simply brilliant.”
With 20 members in each team, they have set themselves a total of £2000 in sponsorship.
Odine said:“We’ve had some great ideas from the Hospice Fundraising Team about how we can raise funds, events such like cake sales, bucket collections and a summer fete– and that’s why we need this network between us and the charity.”
The event is to raise vital funds for St David’s Hospice, a local charity providing free hospice care for adult patients with advanced illnesses and those in need of end of life care.
Ysgol Gogarth’s Family and Community Engagement Officer, Angharad Williams added:
“I had thyroid cancer two years ago. I’m now clear, but the outcome could have been completely different.
“There have also been several members of staff that have had cancer, so it’s very poignant for us as a school to be doing this for St David’s Hospice.”
Places are still available for teams to join the Hospice event. You too could share the experience with your work colleagues, and enjoy a great day out in the beautiful surroundings of Snowdonia.
No experience is required for dragon boat racing and all equipment and instructions will be provided on the day. Team entry is £250 and minimum sponsorship is £1000 per team (£50 each based on a team of 20)
