Julie Bassett from Llanddoged a little village located outside Llanrwst will be completing a Wing Walk this month raising much needed funds for St David’s Hospice, a local palliative care charity!
Julie explained her reason behind completing the challenge:
“In the summer of 2012 I lost both my parents Ron & Joyce Jackson (aged 70 & 69) and mother-in-law Phyllis Bassett (age 73) in a matter of three weeks from each other to cancer.
“Without much notice to any of them becoming seriously ill beforehand either, all three ended up at St David’s Hospice Inpatients at the same time, which was a surreal situation.

Julie praised the Hospice’s work:
“The medical team at the hospice were fantastic and managed to keep both my parents together until the end. The care they gave my parents, mother-in-law and the support given to me, my husband Simon and children through this dark time in our lives was incredible.
Julie continued to express her determination behind supporting the Hospice:
“In 2019 history seemed to repeat itself when my husband Simon suddenly became ill only to find he had terminal cancer with very little time (he had only turned 53).
“Again, St David’s Hospice was a huge support to me and my four teenage children through this dark time.
“I had said after losing my mum, dad and mother-in-law in 2012 that I wanted to give something back to the Hospice but it has been a long and painfully journey and only now with the added loss of Simon do I feel ready to go for it, so let me do it in style and try and be brave enough to get strapped onto a plane to raise money for a cause extremely close to my heart.”
This is not Julie’s first challenge, recently she completed a personal challenge running 133 miles and went uphill- 17,721 feet elevated climb (equivalent of Mount Everest base camp) throughout the month of May. Highlighting Julie’s amazing motivation and dedication!
James Wilde St David’s Hospice’s Conwy Community Fundraiser gave thanks to Julie for her support:
‘’Julie is extremely brave taking on this challenge. To date, she has raised a staggering £1,140 for the Hospice. Without the support of amazing supporters such as Julie, the Hospice would not be able to provide core end of life services free of charge to the people of Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey.’’
