Legacy giving

Leaving a gift in your Will

Leaving a gift in your Will is a meaningful way to support our work after your lifetime. You can choose to leave a fixed amount, a share of your estate, or a specific item, and your solicitor can easily update your Will to include a gift to St David’s Hospice.

Every gift, large or small, makes a difference. Whether your gift helps fund a day of care, supports specialist equipment, or helps us be there for someone at the end of their life, it will be a lasting part of our story.

If you’d like an informal chat about leaving a legacy to St David’s Hospice, or would like to know more about how your gift could be used, please get in touch.

Why making a Will matters – and common misconceptions

Don’t let outdated ideas or myths put your loved ones at risk. Making a Will is an act of care that gives you control and peace of mind, and it also creates an opportunity to support the causes that matter to you.

“The care and compassion they showed my mother was priceless.”

Lowri

“The support they gave my wife and my family was something I will never forget.”

Martin

When St David’s Hospice cared for my mum, it gave our family a safe space where we could simply be together.”

James

Funeral and memorial collections

Many families now choose to ask for donations instead of flowers at a funeral or memorial service. This creates a lasting tribute to their loved one and helps support the care we provide at St David’s Hospice.

You can support our work at a funeral or memorial by:

  • Collecting donations in cash or by cheque at the service, using our donation envelopes.
  • Inviting friends and family to donate online through our website.
  • Working with your funeral director, who can often manage collections on your behalf.

To find out more, request donation envelopes, or discuss funeral collections, contact Shannon Kelly-Jones

Funeral directors

If you’d like to ask a funeral director to help you collect donations, they are usually happy to help with this.
You can provide them with our contact details and we’ll be happy to assist them if they need any help from us.

Reducing Inheritance Tax

Reducing Inheritance Tax (that would otherwise be paid when you die) can be done by leaving a gift in your Will to St David’s Hospice.

Inheritance Tax can be a significant burden for some families and can cause a lot of stress for family members in what is an already upsetting time, after the loss of a loved one. Therefore, inheritance tax planning and mitigation can help ease this burden on your family members.

One method of doing this is by leaving a portion of your estate to a charity, like St David’s Hospice, in your will. If you do so, it will not count towards the total taxable value of your estate. This is called leaving a ‘charitable legacy’. The standard rate of Inheritance Tax is 40% above any allowances that are applicable to you.

You can also reduce the Inheritance Tax rate on the rest of your estate from 40% to 36% if you leave at least 10% of your net estate to a charity.

For guidance regarding inheritance tax and charitable reductions, a financial advisor can help, or an overview is available here.
