A family story that began more than 25 years ago

For Ken and Heather, supporting the Hospice at Christmas has a very personal meaning.

Their parents, Samuel and Joyce, moved to Llandudno in 1975, where they became part of the local community through their guest house on St David’s Road and later a café on Back Madoc Street. Samuel was an active man who would walk to the end of Llandudno Pier and back after breakfast each day.

In 1999, Samuel was diagnosed with aggressive lung cancer. As his condition deteriorated, he made his wishes clear: he wanted to spend his final weeks at home, surrounded by his home comforts and the life he and Joyce had built together. But the pressure on Joyce as his primary carer was becoming immense.

St David’s Hospice and Marie Curie stepped in. They provided twice-daily care and nursing support, to bring extra reassurance and comfort as his needs changed. During his final three weeks, waking night care gave Joyce the chance to sleep, knowing Samuel was being looked after.

That support allowed Samuel to remain at home and spend his final days peacefully with Joyce by his side.

A kindness Joyce never forgot

The experience stayed with Joyce for the rest of her life.

Grateful for the compassion shown to both her and Samuel, she continued to support St David’s Hospice for many years, including regularly playing the Hospice Lottery.

In a particularly touching coincidence, Joyce won the first prize just two weeks before she passed away in July 2026.

Ken and Heather are now sharing their parents’ story in the hope that others will help make the same kind of support available to families facing similarly difficult moments.

Every ticket purchased helps St David’s Hospice continue providing wrap-around care and peace of mind to local people when they need it most.

How to enter

Buying tickets online is quick and simple. Choose how many £2 tickets you would like and enter before the closing date of Friday 11 December 2026.

Make your Christmas count

For Samuel and Joyce’s family, hospice care meant being able to spend those final weeks together, in the place Samuel wanted to be.

By entering this year’s Christmas raffle, you could win one of three cash prizes, and help another family receive the care, reassurance and support they need, when it matters most.

Enter the St David’s Hospice Christmas Raffle 2026 before Friday 11 December.
